Still working on the Aloe. The mid tones are not as dark as they seem here, but I am going to soften those a bit. The first layers, see below, are acrylics. I applied them with a texture sheet, the pattern, and a brayer, and a brush. The turquoise and kiwi with a brayer, for an uneven cover. The clay with a brush, to fill in the white areas that remained uncovered.

I was really tempted to stop right there. Maybe add some line work. Or a messy dab of shariz (merlot). But I knew it wasn’t done.

HA! I just realized it looks like the back-end of a carrot. I painted a carrot butt.

I was going for one of those pots that sits at an angle.

Hmm. So, to do list:

  • Tone down that neon yellow where-did-it-come-from green.
  • Add some life to the washed out, faded, bland background.
  • Maybe add more warmth to the pot.

This is mostly acrylics. The sap green is watercolor. The turquoise outline and the clay crayon marks on the pot are oil pastel.

Reading the comments and your replies are just as entertaining as your blog. I’m afraid I instantly saw carrot butt before I read your comment. Not that theres anything wrong with carrot butts, but (no pun intended) vegetables aren’t usually your thing. I thought, how interesting, Sheila’s branching out! I’m afraid the only way to remedy buttitis would be to change the color of the pot, maybe to turquoise, as there are purple carrots now. Another possibility is to change the shape of the pot. Or what about adding a ‘wabbit’ and going full out.

Adding to the entertainment I see. LOL 😉 I may do that yet. I made some changes today. But I think you are right. Once a carrot, always a carrot. But that’s A-OK. (get it?) I like carrots! Ha ha ha

      Turquoise would work though!

I don’t think I’m going to read your comments anymore. I came to honor your painting and now I cannot see anything but a carrot’s butt! Before reading, I like the unusual perspective and the angle of the pot. The aloe vera leaves have such beautiful green variations.

I know right Laurelle!! LOL, should have kept that to myself. But now that I have seen it, I can’t unsee it. LOL 🙂 I wanted a terracotta pot. But maybe it should be a different color. Ha ha ha ha
Thank you for taking the time, your participation IS an honor my friend 😉

Don’t touch it!!!! I think it works just the way it is . I really like the bright colours in the plant and if you change the background the plant won’t show to such advantage. For the pot, the only change might be to darken the edges a bit to show the roundness. This is great Sheila!

OK Val! I won’t. I’ll try not to. LOL. Thanks so much for your definitive response my friend ;o) You are right. (As usual.) If I add more color to the background, the plant will not stand out as much.
Have fun painting today my friend 😉

Agree with Carol! All those rich and varied greens – it does sparkle. So why is it easier to look at another’s work and say ‘finished’ yet look at your own and be so unsure? Your first layer is so rich. I really love this the way it is. Have a great day!

I have no idea Janet, wish we could all figure that one out. Your work is always stunning to me. And I read your post and wonder how you can see it any other way. LOL. 😉 Happy creating my friend!!

You are leaving the straight and narrow in the dust, Sheila, with your new work. Love the bold. Love the angles. Love the quiet space. Love the bleeds. // Fun to see your early layers — thanks!

Thanks Carol 🙂 Coming back to it now, an hour or so later, it is not as bad as I thought. LOL 😉 I had more process shots, but it was so late, I did not have time to prep them for posting. Enjoy creating today Carol 🙂
