Paper, matte medium, board. Paint, grass, stems, sky, flowers. Details, pen, puffy paint, watercolor crayon, more paint.

I was not planning for them to be hung side by side. I did not plan ahead. Haha. The grass and stems are crinkled paper, I added dry watercolor crayon to add interest there.

I went too dark with the teal, a new brand of paint for me. When it dried I sanded some of it off. The lettering was still hidden, so I used a pen to accent it. I decided to do the orange flowers as well, even though it was showing through a bit better. The white centers and some of the black dots are puffy paint.

I am calling them done for now. I need to move on. But they look too flat to me. I should add some texture or smudging to the sky. And a few leaves would help as well. There is a texture from previous layers, these are recycled boards. Thought about adding puffy swirls to the sky, haha. Not quite sure I could pull it off. Stressed big time over the teeny tiny birds. Hahaha. Open to suggestions. 🙂

Artists are just children who refuse to put down their crayons.

Today was an abstract day. Abstracts with a palette knife. I worked on four small pieces, 5 x 7 Heavy Yupo, 144lb. I really like the heavy Yupo. It does not buckle, even under thick layers of acrylic. I did not tape the sheet down, but it did not warp. Very nice!

I’m still undecided about this one. So much so, that I took to cropping it in Photoshop. The colors are muted, maybe that is what bothers me. Not sure. I do really like the colors. Happy for the practice,

think it would help to use a thick medium with the color. These are craft paints, and some a thicker than others. I need MORE palette knife practice. I like the 2nd and 4th images best. What do you think?

This is my Paddle Plant. Also known as a Flapjack It is a succulent, with thick leaves. I will be painting this again, from a side view. Some of the larger leaves curve downward. That is supposed to be a bad sign, but they are healthy. The leaf edges often turn red in winter. Mine have not.

Whew! I finished. Not sure if I pulled it off, but I had fun in the process. Values kick my butt every time. I painted the soil, brownish with details. But it was distracting. And the background was lighter, with multiple tones and some really cool blooms. Those were distracting as well.

Thinking of going back in and lifting the background. then adding the color of the table in the reference photo. What do you think?
