Another glorious sunset. And my attempt to capture it.  I can say I had fun working on this. And it came quickly.  Still, there are several things I’d change if I could.

The wash in the sky is far too light, and the clouds far too dark. The wash actually looks deeper in person, and the moon does stand out a bit more. When I started with the clouds, the colors were much too light, and I just overcompensated.

The pink on the top cloud was drying too dark, I added more white gouache to the mix, and you can see the result.

My first photo of the sun setting, I thought “WOW! Look at that!”

Any wonder ancient Egyptians worshipped the sun?

The sunset today wasn’t grand or “ahh” inspiring. Still it caught my eye. There was a line of glowing blue along the ridge. And the clouds seemed to be that same vivid hue.

Take a look and tell me if you can see it.

I can’t get over the color in the clouds. This painting is a do over. Mostly because I want to do it better. And also, because that bit of yellow makes no sense. I wanted to capture a bit of warmth in that section of clouds. But it looks like the sun is setting there, and this view is to the east. No sense at all.

On to day eleven!

Saved by the sky. I worked from bottom to top on this. First hill, quick success. 2nd ridge, quick disaster.  I added the details with Indian Red, but the wash was still too wet, so they spread into nothingness.

Added details again, paper was too dry, and they became hard edges. Went over the ridges with water, then added some indigo. Uggghhh! Went back in with more clean water to soften. Next, decided to add more of the overall color. That helped in some areas.

Debated about covering the mess in indigo. Still might. Thought that maybe a decent sky would help to save the piece. Lucked out there. So, two-thirds happy with this. Not bad.
