February – Day 18

I think two roads diverged in the woods. I started with one color story. And ended with another. Not sure if I merged them amicably. Yesterday I started three panels, all with the same palette. What I added today, is more muted.

Overall I am happy with this. I am holding it as a WIP though. The lines on the right are sort of bothering me. Sharp diagonals, and the horizontal line of the striped area at the top. Let me know what you think. Are they a problem?

The title comes from this long mind trip… I wanted to do more of a Burridge type bouquet. Bob reminds me of my Dad. Dad loves music from the 50’s and I grew up listening to that. The song popped (Yes Dotty, popped, he he.) into my head, and there you have it.

I like this except for the yellow which I assume was part of the colour palette before you changed in mid-stream – maybe a blue wash to turn it green? As for the lines can you put some behind the vase on the left to balance that aspect? It looks like this painting had a mind of its own , Sheila but I think with a few changes it could be a winner – the vase and the flowers are great!

I think it did Val, LOL haha. There are some lines in the vase, I think to add more would be too much. But maybe more of the green (yellow) there would do the same. Thanks so much Val for sharing your ideas. You have me thinking now 😉 Have fun today!

This is lovely Sheila! The ‘blue’ just sets everything off so well. Lovely line work and the lights and darks in the flowers! The upper right might be a bit strong, but maybe start off veiling a bit of it first. I like how it comes up against the flowers – makes them pop. Is a little gem at this size!
    Have a great day.

Thanks so much Janet 🙂 Yes, I will leave it next to the flowers, great right the, the POP 😉 I was thinking of removing… but veiling, yes, that would be nice! Enjoy your painting time Janet 😉

I feel like the yellow areas are great. Mainly because they’re situated nicely and kind of make my eyes go around and around, staying in the picture! And I LOVE Bobby’s girl! This is very beautiful, Sheila!

Love the Bobby’s Girl allusion and the long mind trip that brought you to it; laughed at your use of the word “popped,” reflecting back to a chuckle from a few days ago.

The subtlety of your collaged text is very appealing—I didn’t notice the collage at first glance, and enjoyed the discovery of it when the visual language of the piece drew me in to explore.

What technique do you use for your splatters? what paint? what viscosity of paint?

Popped is a dangerous word Dotty, spelled wrong, spell check will not catch it 😉 LOL. I thought of you when I used it, and I likely always will now 😉
Awesome to hear the collage was hiding at first.:)

I used craft paints on this, and each brand is different. I make a puddle, and get the paint very wet. Wet, but not dripping, it clings to the brush. Then load the brush. I tap the brush to get drops. Most of the time, there is very little mess off the canvas. Only a drop or two of paint if starting from scratch. But often I am using what is left on the palette.
I change the size of the brush depending on the size of drops I want.
I have used a large brush, and made puddles of color, and then added puddles of other colors, to let them mix and mingle on the paper. This is more for a background.

I was so surprised when I read the dimensions. This artwork feels so much larger. You did a terrific job on the bouquet and the wonderful texture in the vase and table. I like the yellow-green dots of color within the flowers and the moments of that color elsewhere tying it altogether. I think the lines add a nice interest in the background. The large yellow-green in the top right-hand corner might be smaller because it’s competing a bit for my interest with the bouquet.

Thank you Laurelle… you confirmed one of my thoughts. I will soften that line, and at the same time, make the area smaller. 🙂 I think the misleading size is my mistake, Wasn’t paying attention when I saved it. Glad to think it could work as a larger piece though 😉 Nice to see this through your eyes. 😉 Have fun creating today Laurelle 🙂
