Well color me confused. I had the wrong idea in my head. What this challenge was about. I was confident enough, that I did not bother to reread the design brief. Not until after I had completed my entry. Bam! You thought what?

Our assignment, per Spoonflower: Over the last year we’ve traveled to the 1800’s, 1920’s, 1970’s and early 2000’s through Design Challenges. This week you’re in the driver’s seat. Take us on a journey to your favorite time period, even if it hasn’t actually happened yet!

My foggy brain was thinking time. Thinking abstract. Thinking how Covid has altered our perception of time. Thinking of how the pandemic imposed limits should have freed up time for us. But yet we are all feeling like we have even less time in the day, than we did before.

Well, yeah. I knew I was not going to get all of that into one repeating pattern. So I simplified. Abstract, clock. Begin. I chose the palette, and only later realized that my colors were too literal. Day and night. Yeah. Real clever there. 😏🤪

Voting is open until the 7th.

Working on last weeks challenge made me crave sunny colors. I’m sure our consistently cold weather has something to do with it as well.

This is the third version. I had to work out a few details, and minimize along the way. It is often interesting, how the original idea can seem splendid. And yet, sometimes, doesn’t quite work in the end. So you try again. And somewhere along the way, everything just clicks.

I had that moment, with this design. Suddenly, it just felt right. So here is to failure. And how it can sometimes be, exactly what was needed.

Earthy Blooms placed at 1218 of 1774 entries with 37 votes. (It has 49 ” favorites”.) You can see the top 69, here. That was a heck of a lot of entries! Thanks so much for taking the time to vote! I am grateful for your support. 🙏

Gosh, this seems so dark to me. I am going to take this design, and create new colorways for it. In March. LOL. After the Gathering. I’m happy to hear your suggestions and ideas!

Happy February everyone!

A Month Of Watercolor & Pattern Making

You can click any image to see it full size.

Whew! I am amazed I was able to do so many collage pieces this month. Thank you Lord! They were so much fun, and I learned so much. Fear made me delay starting them. Stupid fear.

Spoonflower Design Challenges

I completed all of challenges this month. Again, Lots of learning here. I learned how to make a check and a plaid. And my speed is improving. Very happy about that.

Along with each challenge design, I was able to create a small collection with pattern variations and solid coordinates. I may also add a ditsy print, textured solid, stripe or other coordinating pattern to them.

For the Ikat Cross, I am going to make some slight changes before working on a collection. More fun ahead. I also will work more on the two Circle pattern Ideas. 🌻

Thanks so much for following along with me this month. Your encouragement is a blessing. And thank you so much, for voting in the design challenges. Thank you! 😊

This week’s Spoonflower design challenge is 1970’s Throw Pillows. I had so much fun with this. I used some flower shapes from a previous design, and created a few new shapes as well. I love the little white blooms. I could have added 3 or 4 more, LOL. But then the wood grain flowers would have been covered completely.

There are 85 flowers in the design, and about 300 layers. The pink flowers have 7 layers, the large yellow with the red center is only 2 layers. For fun I added a corduroy patterned bloom. I researched colors and patterns from the era. And yeah, that green is the hue I fell in love with during last September’s 30-Day Creative Gathering. LOL. I sampled it from one of my paintings. Very Avocado. 🤣 Voting is open.

Gingham Check (last week’s challenge) placed 1064 of 1308 entries with 15 votes. The winning design had 333 votes. Thanks so much for taking the time to vote!

World Watercolor Month

So hard to believe WWM is entering the final week. I have so many ideas, and not enough days are left. 🤣 For the 16th, I didn’t post a finished piece. Just parts and pieces. My creative time that day was spent making papers for use in collages. (Click any image for closer view.)

Catherine Rains 5 Day Collage Kickstart

I had so much fun with these! Every step. Making papers is so addictive. Patterned paper, painted papers, textured tissue. FUN! Tearing paper is fun. 🤣 Arranging, gluing, embellishing.

I thought I was finished, but now, I think I can add more to these. You may see them again. There are a couple more on the way. Cat recommends working with a limited palette, and honestly. I am ready to do a series in several different colorways. Collage might just be my September challenge theme. Haha. 😉

our inner fire goes out.
It is then burst into flame
by an encounter with another human being.
