Purple Tulips

This painting came together quickly. Nice surprise that. I goofed on the right leaf. Big time goofed. Wrong color choice. I mixed a green that was much too blue. I re-wet the area, and lifted it out (Thanks CheyAnne for the reminder.)

Two more layers of green there, and it was feeling kind of blah. So I added another, and it just was not complimenting the other greens. So I tried a layer of white gouache. And another. And then it was too white.

If you take a look at tulip leaves, they often do have a white-ish, grayish cast to them. and are more on the blue side of green. But I really love the other greens, I did not want to change them at all.

The solution was to take some of the spring green that was still on my palette, and glaze over the leaf. Voila! You can see I also added some highlights to the bud on the right.

I am debating adding a brilliant color to the background. I was thinking of doing a series of four with the tulips in the previous post being the first. But I think that may detract from these flowers. I did a digital background, to try it out.

Maybe this color is not the right one. I am eager to hear your opinion. To add or not to add!

Was working on this for a gift, but it is going in the log books as practice. I will have to try again. Hoping for loose, but I got lost in the details. Here is the reference photo.

Yellow bouquet

I was hoping to stay somewhat neutral with the surroundings, and let the flowers stand out. But my glazes got away from me. To be honest, I mucked it up about half way through. But I took a chance and tried to save it. And tried, and tried.

Some shadows are too dark, some are too light. I cropped it to see if that would help. Didn’t. But it is not a total loss. I had fun working on it.

So a daily painting it is..

Postcard Art and Baby Hummer Sighting

Working on a submission for the A.I.R postcard show. This is idea #1 and I am going to do a fabric design with this as well. I have already started working on it, more on that later.

I know this looks simple, and it is. I went through nine revisions though. My first attempt is below. I wanted the dripping paint to be straight, and I was holding the paper correctly. Mystery breeze made for angled drips.

I may have gone overboard with the splatters, But I am tempted to age it a bit more with scratches and marks. I am working on others. Don’t have a name for this, so if anything comes to mind let me know. This is obviously a cosmic remnant from Soul Art day.

Here is another mini. Scary Mary. Sally square head. She reminds me of every other photo in my high school yearbook. Eighties big hair. There was more, but I cropped it. Not very good, but proof I am still at it.

For Sandy. Baby hummingbird in his nest. You can barely see him, look for the black beak pointing up. This is just outside the front door. (Rarely used) The nest is in the potato bush about six feet high. We thought there were two chicks, but now we can only see one.
