Tackling Texture And Magenta Mail Art

Texture Boards, 2016 sheiladelgado.com

Working through Pauline Agnew’s Artbyte One. First lesson, texture. Pauline prompts us with multiple tools, and encourages experimentation. My boards are larger than she suggested, they were scraps I had on my desk.

Boards:
1) I used torn paper to build up layers. I painted over some of the layers, and continued adding more with matte medium.
2) Beginning to build layers of color.
3) Pauline suggests using joint filler, which looks really fun. Not having any, I used some gloopy (old) gesso and built layers of that. There was a thick blob that made me think of a sun, even though this was meant as an exercise and not concerned with composition.
4) Building layers of color. Adding and then removing, adding more again.
5) Using an old ATM card to spread paint. The translucent blue settled in the hollows, revealing the texture of the paper, very nice!
6) Layers of wash acrylics.
7) Layers of thick impasto.
8) Continuation of impasto.

I can see all of these boards becoming finished works. Ideas are forming. Now it is on to Lesson two!

Mail Art

Received these two beauties today. The first is from Lisa Comperry in Texas. The card reads “LOVE”. This lovely poem was included on the back:

One day is spun in gold
another day seems red hot or icy cold.
Passing storms clear the air
and change the tide.
Each day a new sun.

Mary Underwood from Michigan included this encouraging reminder on the back of her beautiful card.

Be Happy
Be Bright
Be You

Visit the links, their photography is awesome! I am so glad these artists included their address on the card! There is a wonderful video on Lisa’s blog about rescued baby animals as well as her wonderful sunsets. Mary has wonderful sunflowers on her page, and her abstract daisy is gorgeous.

Thank you both so much for sharing your gorgeous art with me! Love flowers!

Sunflower Signs

Spent yesterday painting signs for the bridal shower. The centers are chalkboard paint so they can add “turn left” or other directions as needed.

Kat Sloma has added a new batch of decorated envelopes on her blog. Take a peek, you will see one you recognize.  I am so in awe of all the talent being shared. Only one week to go, and then the swap begins. So excited!

Happy weekend everyone!

Flower Frenzy

Flowers-first

I volunteered to make mini flower bookmarks for Rachel’s bridal shower. Each guest is going to receive a small gift bag filled with goodies. We had paper scraps from making the invitations, couldn’t let them go to waste! The card stock has a nice linen texture on one side. I thought that would make a nice backing.

Step 1: cut watercolor paper 1 in. x 2.5 in.
Step 2: cut backing paper 1.25 in. x 2.75 in.
Step 3: paint flowers (I used acrylics)
Step 4: paint top area
Step 5: glue front to back place under a stack of books to dry.

Step 6: cover entire front area, (including the backing paper edges) with One Step Crackle paint. You want to have a fairly thick layer of that. Let dry.
Step 7: Choose a contrasting paint color from your artwork. I chose the dark color from my background area. Brush the color over the entire front area, (Do one at a time.) Quickly wipe off color with a paper towel. If you find some paint left that you don’t want, use a damp paper towel to clean it up. The paint settles highlights the cracks.

All-cracked-up

Step 8: I take an old pink nail file (fine grit) and clean up the edges of the bookmarks.
Step 9: cut magnetic tape (roll) to size. The tape has a sticky side, but you will need to glue it to the paper. Peel off the protective paper, and put a strip of all-purpose Tacky glue down the middle of the magnet. Place magnets under a stack of books to dry.

I made 45 , about a dozen extras just to be safe.
