Prayer Potentiality

Let us Pray. 6 x 6 acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas. 2015 sheiladelgado.com

They are done! Whew!  I thought it would take me four days to paint them. Nine 6 x 6 gallery wrapped canvases. But I finished them in three days. I also started the 8 x 8 requested at the last-minute.

My first try with that one was a disaster. It is in browns, with small touches of blue, green and yellow. It looked like I had spilled chocolate sauce all over the canvas. And not in an artsy, Pollock inspired way. More like I tripped and splattered the sauce, and then slipped in the mess, and spilled even more.

But it is better now. More Cafe au lait, and less Nestle. Time for the lettering and two coats of matte polyurethane and they will be ready for delivery.

Birthday Notion

Apologies for the bad photo quality. There is a glare off the upper right corner, altering the colors. This is my gift to a friend for her birthday.  She loved it so much, that she asked me to do nine more. Those will be her gifts to the church council.

I was really intimidated by doing the lettering for this. I kept putting it off, actually. I started by using Photoshop to choose a font and layout, sizing it for the canvas. I printed it out, and then transferred it to the canvas.

I painted the letters, then outlined them with a waterproof pen. I had to go back and touch up a few spots with more white paint. I was sort of alternating between pen and paint to smooth out a few mistakes. But overall, the lettering was easier than I thought it would be, and I did not goof half as much as I expected. Nice surprise.

I also worked on a quick card.

Lonely Landscape = Lively Learning

Lonely Landscape. 14 x 18 acrylic on canvas.

This is a large piece for me. I enjoyed working larger. It was a bit cramped working while this piece was drying though, my desk is really the only space I have for the task. This was request from a barn loving friend, and I am happy with how it turned out.

Technically, there are many mistakes here. For one, the barn is centered. The top right corner of the roof is exactly the center point of the canvas. Didn’t plan that. Oh and that white, lighter area under the barn, is not really there. Don’t know why it is showing that way. There is also much more movement in the sky, but the 72 ppi smooths it out.

I have worked on this for almost a month. Sheesh! Had no idea until I went back to figure out when I started. If you ask me, this has “student” written all over it. That’s O.K. Because I did learn a lot each step of the way. I was referencing the art of Caitlin Schwerin. A sky here, some land there.

I painted the sky over six times. Lost count. Tried for some clouds but they were not working, so blue sky it is. Mostly I think my failure at that is not having the correct brush. My first attempt at the mountains failed too. They were much shorter lengthwise, and the highlights were all wrong. Here are some close-ups of the finished piece.

A closer look.

The mountains were added after the recipient said the barn looked lonely. Still lonely maybe, but now your eyes have something else to look at.

Happy Tuesday to you!
