Long day. Productive, thank goodness. So busy painting away, I couldn’t even remember yesterday’s post. Going a little 30 in 30 loony. Anyone else?

This is acrylics, Caran d’Ache Neocolor Crayons, and watercolor pencils. I started by making marks, then painted over them. Like a lasagna, I repeated those layers three or four times. Using a palette knife, I spread the paint, and sometimes scratched into it. The light layer you see, took a few spritz of water, before I continued to scrape most of that layer off.

I went over some of the linear marks, and used a wet brush to activate the color. I left some of the previous marks untouched, just hints under the layer of scraped paint.  I added more venetian red in areas, and used water to move the color there as well.

I had no idea what to do at that point. Turned the paper and looked at it from each angle. Decided to take a piece of crumpled plastic wrap and use it like a sponge to apply paint. I have sponges, but the wrap had already been used and was next to me on the desk. I applied several tints of the same color.

Maybe this could use something more, but I like it.

A very interesting piece, Sheila. I really like the background – good texture and colour. I wonder if the blue should go all the way to the edge on the upper left, that spot looks unfinished to me. About going loony – yes! It is a good thin I can check what I posted yesterday so I know where I am – lol. Only 10 more days!

That is what I had to do Val, check. LOL I considered that too, it does look unfinished. I cropped it in Photoshop. But then I also lost the light area at the bottom. I think the unfinished look works with the abstracted nature of this. (But yes, it bugs me too val, LOL.) Have fun today Val!

This is great! Love the textures and the colour. If you want more value change you could always glaze some smaller areas. Thank you for the great description of your process. Always interesting to hear how other artists work. I think I would move on and just do another and another….Have a wonderful day Sheila!

Look at you, Sheila! Letting the wind blow through! The mottled dusky blue area is especially appealing to me. Thanks once again for inviting us into your studio space with you—getting to watch you spread and scrape and reach for crumpled plastic wrap. FUN.

I agree, I like it too and thanks for sharing your process. Those NeoColors are wonderful aren’t they? The only thing I would add is some light blue to the leaf mass, but it is good as it is.

Thanks for the suggestion Marion. 🙂 I was hoping for the tints to be more visible, but they dried pretty much the same. Enjoy your creative time 🙂
