Day three, and thee

Thanks so much for visiting, and for commenting! Wanted to say that ahead of time, just in case. The deadline is breathing down my neck. And of course, the computer decided to act up. I kept getting the error message “scratch disk is full”. Which basically means that Photoshop is out-of-order and closed for repairs. Not a good thing.

I was up until 2:20 am. Trying to get a jump on the day by writing my post. My #3 assignment for Summer School is “somewhere in the middle” as Jonah (sleepless in Seattle) so confidently put it. Paint, scan, clean, add details, place, and post.

I painted more feathers than you see here. Watercolor washes are finicky. Several of my first attempts were not as intense, so I won’t be using them in the final design. They are good, but just don’t fit with these. I still need to add details, and I have the pattern worked out in my head. Here’s hoping it works on paper too.

I also completed this companion pattern with the feathers from yesterday’s post. I will make this available in my shops later this month

    Hi Sheila,
Well, I’m a day behind on my challenge – and I write about the late hour in my blog post too. But you were up much later than I. Nice work you’ve got going there with the feathers. I don’t understand what you are doing – is this all done via the computer or do you paint the feathers with a brush and watercolor? It looks like a great watercolor wash! I totally admire your sense of design. Really wonderful! – Jim

I will explain, am explaining in my post for tomorrow. Sometimes the design is all digital, but I often paint first, and then scan the artwork, and clean up the rough edges in the computer,if needed. And Then I start working on the placement. These were watercolors I did quickly on a sketch pad. And the design is actually made from just two short rows of feathers. Thanks for stopping by Jim, it is always great to hear from you 🙂

Hey There Sheila, Me, too – I’m scrambling to catch up with the 30 in 30 challenge! Whew! Need some fairy dust or something. Your feathers for today are so pretty – the shapes, the colors, the designs. Great work. You are very brave working with photoshop. My brain can’t take all that info. 🙂 My daughter laughs at me because I’m am SO hesitant trying new things on the computer. Enjoy Day #4. And good luck with your the rest of your Summer School.

Thanks Joan 🙂 I still only know maybe a third… guessing… of Photoshop. I just get in there and click on things and see what they do. There really is not a whole lot to learn for prepping artwork, or doing these patterns. I mean, you do the same things over and over, so it gets.. intuitive. But don’t listen to me about how easy it is. ;)) I have been putting off learning Illustrator for almost a month. I took a fabulous class… but it is very different from Photoshop, and it is like teaching an old dog new tricks. :)) So many cool things you can do in AI, I am going to force myself to learn it!

I think the daily blogging is the hardest part of the challenge! I love your stylized feather concepts Sheila! I can see them on textiles already! I hope that my rainbow feathers have played a small part in inspiring you too. xoSandy

The blogging is the hardest part for me too Sandy. And I am already behind on visiting blogs and commenting. Of course your feathers have inspired me. 🙂 I will be posting on the summer school in a couple of days, and you will see how these feathers fit in with the other designs.
