Day 16 – No Doubt

Tried something new. Well, sort of new. I have tried before. Painting with a palette knife. Turned out so bad, I kept adding splatter to cover up the yuck. It was still awful, so I added some texture to the table. Trying to bring the yuck together cohesively.

I am cringing. But yes, I am actually going to post this palette knife failure. When I scanned it, I made a last-ditch effort to save it. I added a digital center to the top bloom. I don’t think it made a bit of difference. You can see the original below.

Isn’t that funny Karin? I wasn’t expecting any comments, and this got more than any other day I think. It would make an interesting book, comparing what artists think is their best, and what work was most loved by viewers.

I have to agree with Christine..I don’t see failure. You tried something new, something outside your comfort zone, and that’s great!! You’re stretching, and learning. That’s success in my book. 🙂 Congrats!!

Thank you Katie. That was the idea, try something new. And I shouldn’t expect to create awesome the first time. Or second, or… I have tried knives before, but not enough yet to build up any sort of knowledge or history of experience. Have fun with your studio today Katie!

No matter the end result I am sure you learned something Sheila!. The total look isn’t bad but I think it is the colours that don’t work. The only yellow is in the flowers! If they were shades of purple to match the shadows and the splatter in the background it might work better. Frustrating I am sure but today will be a better day!

Using the purple was sort of an afterthought, and I didn’t think to do the flowers in that. Thanks for that Val, 😉 Enjoy your day 🙂

Look at all those gorgeous neutrals and your textures – wow! I love how you are pushing yourself and experimenting with different tools, colours and textures. By the end of the thirty days I think you will have brought yourself to a whole new level in your painting. How exciting is that!!

The vase caught my eye immediately, with its solid unassuming curves, its quiet willingness to reflect, its openness to harboring patches of shadow. Its the person in the room I am walking over to introduce myself to for a conversation.
Did you commit to thirty paintings in thirty days? You did.
Did you complete a painting on day 15? You did.
Did you post on day 16? You did.
    Success!

Day 16 is your “free canvas #1” found in a neighbor’s yard for the taking. Have fun with it!

Awesome idea Dotty! See why I am so inspired by you 🙂 (The vase is the only thing I was really happy with when I finished. LOL)

Look how much you learned from this and inspired all of us to accept our not-perfect ones…it is wonderful when there is joy in the process but it is true it is our difficulties that make us grow

Very true Laurelle. If it were easy, what would be the point LOL 🙂 I did have fun, and I figured that was worth a post 😉 Hope you had fun today with the portrait 🙂

Using a palette knife takes a little time but well worth the effort. From this it seems you are not letting go and using it like it was a brush. I like the effect. Get some cheap paper and try out various strokes. Go for it!

Thanks Carol. You are right, I have no idea how to use it. I have a few different knives. I am going to look up some videos and see what I can learn today 🙂 Enjoy my friend 🙂

It is not a failure. I think it is different and the addition of the center helped a lot. Don’t be disappointed. tomorrow is another day. If you saw this with out all the others you have done you might be impressed. I think it works.
