Still working on the Aloe. The mid tones are not as dark as they seem here, but I am going to soften those a bit. The first layers, see below, are acrylics. I applied them with a texture sheet, the pattern, and a brayer, and a brush. The turquoise and kiwi with a brayer, for an uneven cover. The clay with a brush, to fill in the white areas that remained uncovered.

I was really tempted to stop right there. Maybe add some line work. Or a messy dab of shariz (merlot). But I knew it wasn’t done.

HA! I just realized it looks like the back-end of a carrot. I painted a carrot butt.

I was going for one of those pots that sits at an angle.

Hmm. So, to do list:

  • Tone down that neon yellow where-did-it-come-from green.
  • Add some life to the washed out, faded, bland background.
  • Maybe add more warmth to the pot.

This is mostly acrylics. The sap green is watercolor. The turquoise outline and the clay crayon marks on the pot are oil pastel.

One of the 30 in 30 artists introduced me to the art of Andrew Faulkner. Completely slipped my mind who, but I thank you! I had in mind for today doing an 8 x 8 abstract, with the colors you see above. Pure abstract. Non-representational. Then I saw his work, and next I saw Mingus in these colors. So there you go. There I went.

Painted mostly with a palette knife. I might rework the sky. That turquoise is far too green. And the foreground is definitely out. Had no idea there. Just trying colors. I’m not going to put in grass or anything like that. Thinking, just a slight variation in the front hill color. Suggestions are more than welcome and highly regarded 🙂

Painted until two in the morning. All I came up with was crud. Finally I just let it go, and went to bed. Below is my first attempt. Yuck.

The orange in the sky is a mistake. I laid down that color first intending to go in a different direction. Thought it might resemble fading light so I left it. But it just looks dirty to me. The dark hills are slightly darker in person. There is no dotted outline in the middle of the left ridge. Layered like a Oreo cookie. To neatly stacked. See. Yuck.

So then I thought cropping it might do the trick. Nope.

Next I grabbed a scrap, and played with oil pastels. Yup. More proof I should just call it a night.

Laura Hollick’s International Soul Art Day takes place on May 25th. This will mark my fifth year participating. It is an all day virtual event. Laura guides you through a thought-provoking journey, to help you connect to spirit and insights.

Ready for a day of fun? Open to everyone, you can join in as your schedule allows. Choose a favorite medium, or try a new one. It is empowering to know that you are connected with so many kindred spirits. Thriving in the energy that is artistic expression.

A couple of days ago I decided to clean out my stored artworks. I am recycling what I can. Six boards of different sizes are gessoed and ready to go. Twenty 6 x 6 pieces of Yupo are washed and standing by.  I even “washed” pieces of Arches. I figure that I can gesso them as well. So I guess I am ready for Soul Art. Don’t you find it interesting that the thought came to me, just before the invitation did?

I hope you will consider taking part in this creative cluster. Visit the link above for a short video introduction. Click on the images for a look back at my Soul Art Experiences.

Splatter stripe has been “favorited” by many of the designers on Spoonflower. A few that I really admire as well. (Very cool!)  I am going to take that as a good sign. Fingers crossed!  Still a few more days to vote!

Happy weekend everyone!
